Rheumatic Fever in Ayurvedic View :

In ayurveda, rheumatic fever is also known as AAMAVATA JWARA. It is a dreadful disease which will make patient completely bed ridden if not treated properly. Rheumatic fever is a general disorder and this is accompanied by feverishness, pain in the joints and copious perspiration. The tendency of this disease is to spread in an erratic manner, and it involves the smooth membranes of the body, especially the heart. Children and adolescents are more prone to this disease and it is generally not seen among people over thirty years of age. If an individual is attacked by the disease up to the age of eighteen, proper care and medication can control the disease.

Rheumatic fever generally begins with a chill and is followed by fever. The patient feels stiffness or pain in one or more joints, usually of the ankles, knees, wrists and shoulders. As time passes by, the pain becomes more and more severe. The face of the patients gets flushed and his whole body perspires a lot. The pulse is rapid and strong and the temp. is usually 39.4degree  Celsius. Loss of appetite, excessive thirst and constipation is also suffered by the patient. If the disease is not controlled, certain complications such as Inflammation of the outer membrane, the inner membrane, and the muscle of the heart may develop. The risk of complications related to heart is greater among patients of tender age since their joints are small and their swelling may sometimes be overlooked.

Clinical Features:

Clinical features of Amavatha are elevated ASO titre , ESR, pain all over the body (Joints) loss of taste, thirst, lack of enthusiasm, heaviness, fever, indigestion and swelling of the body parts (joints). In certain cases C-Reactive Protein will be elevated.

Ama (indigested food) associated with Vatha moves quickly to the different seats of Kapha in the Body, filling them and the dhamanies (Blood vessels) with waste materials. There the bad end product of digestion associated with vatha, pitha and Kapha assuming different colours, blocks the tissue parts and the passage with thick waxy materials. It produces weakness and heaviness of the heart which becomes the seat of the disease.

Rheumatic Fever Treatment in JEEVANEEYAM:

In JEVANEEYAM we have developed a combination of Medicines for the treatment of Rheumatic Fever. Since the origin of disease is in stomach first line of treatment should be to strengthen the digestive system, so as to remove amadosha (indigested food). For that purpose patient has to take drugs which are appetizers and laxatives, externally affected patient has to undergo Lepanam specially developed in JEEVANEEYAM  (Procedure in which patient is made to lie on a wooden table and apply special medicine RHEUMA – 9Ex mixed with Tamarind leaf juice  by 2 trained masseurs for certain period).

Apart from the above given medicines the following herbs can also be used for rheumatic fever which proves to be very beneficial.

  • Ginger is very helpful in Arthritis and Rheumatism.
  • Dandalion leaf increases output from the kidneys and its root is a mild laxative and liver tonic. Infusion of its leaves and decoction from its root can be made and used for about 7-days.
  • Nettel is a great cleanser of blood and also very rich in minerals. It helps also in the repair and renewal of tissues. Both remedies can be combined to yield optimum favourable results.
  • Meadowsweat is recommended to get relief from extreme pain. Nettle and Meadowsweat infusions can be used for the purpose.

Once the patient gets clinically OK, he/she should undergo Elakizhi, pizhichil etc for the recuperation and complete recovery.
